Hypoglycaemia vs. Hyperglycaemia
Many of us know someone that has troubles managing their blood sugars, but not in the same way that diabetics do. These people are often diagnosed as having hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia, or low and high blood sugar respectively. These conditions often have direct causes that can be easily remedied by the addition or the subtraction of blood sugar from the body.
Hypoglycaemia
The condition of low blood sugar is something that all of us have experienced at one point or another. And while it’s not the most comfortable of situations, it can also be managed quite easily with the addition of sugar to the body.
The basic causes of low blood sugar include:
• Skipping a meal
• Not eating when hungry, delaying a meal
• Exercise
• Having too much insulin in the body
• Not eating enough carbohydrates
As your body is depleted of blood sugar, there is a larger level of insulin in the body then. And while this doesn’t seem like it would be a problem, it can cause symptoms like:
• Agitation
• Blurred vision
• Difficulty concentrating
• Fatigue
• Feeling weak
• Hunger
• Irritability
• Paleness
• Perspiration
• Rapid heartbeat
• Trembling
More severe symptoms that require medical attention include:
• Temporary loss of consciousness
• Convulsions
• Coma
But a person can prevent these symptoms or stop them by having a sugary snack. This might include a few sips of a soft drink or by drinking orange juice. For more severe cases, a medication called sandostatin (Octreotide) can be used. What normally happens is that these symptoms will come up a few hours after you eat and then subside with eating within fifteen to twenty minutes. It’s important for diabetics to realize the symptoms of not having enough sugar as well because too much insulin is just as bad as having too little.
Hyperglycaemia
Understandably, a condition in which your insulin is too low is considered diabetes. Affecting about 1% of the population, this condition is regulated by adding insulin to your body to maintain a steady level of sugar in the bloodstream.
