Symptoms and Signs of Heart Problems
The truly concerning part of Coronary Heart Disease is not that it kills more people than cancer, but that it can be a silent killer. By affecting the blood vessels and heart, not only can heart related conditions be a result, but strokes are another possible outcome of the disease. In many patients, there are no symptoms at all, making this difficult to diagnose unless the patient is aware they may be at risk.
Some patients will complain of:
Chest pain
This pain can be moderate or severe, depending on the severity of the blockage as well as the patient’s ability to measure pain. Also known as angina, this chest pain is a signal that the heart is not getting enough oxygen.
There are two main kinds of chest pain that is seen with coronary heart disease:
• Typical chest pain – This is a heavy, squeezing pain that occurs right below the chest bone. It can subside with rest and become worsened with activity or excitement in the patient.
• Atypical chest pain – This chest pain comes and goes at irregular intervals. It can occur in the left arm, the chest or the back rather than directly under the chest bone. Often seen in women, this kind of chest pain is difficult to diagnose and often goes away on its own.
Shortness of breath
Since the heart is not getting enough oxygen, you might also feel like you are short of breath when you have coronary heart disease. These instances will occur for no reason or during activity or excitement. This shortness of breath can feel like you are having troubles breathing or that you are unable to inhale and exhale as you normally do. You might also hear wheezing or noises when you are breathing if the shortness of breath is severe.
Heart attack
Unfortunately for some, the first sign of Coronary Heart Disease may be a heart attack. This is when the heart is not getting enough oxygen and the heart muscle is beginning to die. If not treated in time, this is can be a fatal condition.
There may be other symptoms as well, depending on the patient.
